Hello,
We are relocating to the Greensboro area and are looking for information on nice areas to live/rent, what types of things there are for families, what is the downtown Greensboro area like, are there lakes/ponds around, what is the hiking like and how far is it to the mountains, what is the shopping like, is there an artsy community....any information would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Re: Greensboro Questions
Hi!
I went to school in GSO.... in terms of where to live- stick north and west. If you look on google, you'll see train tracks that run east to west through town (Just south of High Point Rd).... stay north of them! Shopping is decent, they've really expanded Friendly Center and it's much nicer now. Four Seasons mall is ok... usually crawling with teenagers though. There is somewhat of an artsy commuity due to UNC-Greensboro's strong arts programs (theater, design... ect) You are about 1.5-2 hours from the mountains and 3 hours to the beach. Good Luck!
There are also lots of parks, lakes and hiking in and around such areas. I know the City of Greensboro has a pretty good Parks and Rec site--many neighborhoods will have little community parks (ie Fishers Park, Three Meadows). There's actually a National Park in Greensboro--Guilford Battleground Park--though I'm pretty sure I just butchered the name. What's nice is that a lot of them "connect" through greenways. For instance, Country Park (which is a City park) is connected to Battleground (National) with has a "greenway" built as a shortcut to Bur Mil Park (another City park). There are lots of trails within all three of those parks.
The lakes/ponds are generally our water supplies, so there's no swimming (though ironically they allow small watercraft
.) The bigger lakes are towards the outskirts of town, though the "outskirts" are become farther and farther away as developers move in and develop the land. Lake Jeanette, Lake Brandt, Lake Townsend all have pretty good hiking along their shorelines as well. Again, I think the Parks and Rec website will give you more detail.
HTHS!
Will you be able to visit before deciding on a rental, or will you be moving in site unseen?
I would also stick to NW Greensboro or if you want an urban setting, then I would look downtown.
