Gardening Newb

Hello all... new to the board, hope you can help.  I tried to make my question as educated as possible with help from the interwebs.  I'm trying to learn about gardening, but it's going to be a long slow uphill battle.

Last summer we bought a house with a no maintenance garden (HA!).  Apparently all that means is that I don't have any grass, I do have lots of plants that I need to work on though.  I'm sure this summer I'll be seeking more advice but for now I have a question about trimming bushes.

We didn't do any trimming last fall.  I really should have, but I didn't and now am paying for it.  We have a number of bushes (non evergreen but that's all I know) that are quite overgrown and now need to be trimmed back for next years growing season.  I've looked this up on the all knowing internet and it says I should do this in the winter before the next growing season.

So here's the rub.  I live in a zone 3a.  Right now the temperatures is above 32 degrees during the day, but decidedly below at night.  There's still snow on the ground as well.  Can I trim my bushes now or do I need to wait until its above freezing 24hrs a day to ensure I don't end up with frost damage?
