Moving to Boston--Where to Live?

Hi!

I will be starting my grad school this fall and we will be moving to Boston. Where should we look to buy?  I want to be some place where I can take the train/bus to Cambridge very easily.

 Thanks, girls!

Re: Moving to Boston--Where to Live?

  • Cambridge, Davis Square (Somerville), Belmont, Beacon Hill are all easy public transportation wise.

I love Charlestown but that is a PITA to get to Cambridge from.

  • are you looking to buy? (house, condo, don't care?) or rent?  that will influence my answer!

  • It really depends on your budget and if you want a condo/ townhouse or house.

  • Watertown and Waltham might be good options too (bus, not train).  By T you basically want to be on the red line so you could look at where that runs.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I loved living in Cambridge but it is $$  Arlington, Belmont, Watertown, and Waltham are a bit more affordable and a good commuting distance
  • I live in Quincy, I really like it.  Close enough to boston to go there for the fun stuff but far enough away to not get tired of it.

  • Going to Harvard Square?  Personally, I love Watertown.  It's about a 15 minute bus ride from Watertown Square into Harvard Square.  You can get a nice townhouse-style condo for around $300K and some of the nice condos in the big buildings are cheaper.  Houses probably start around $450K.  When we were renting, we paid about $1200 per month.  Good Luck!
  • We live in South Boston and the Red Line goes right to Cambridge so it's pretty easy to get to.
  • I live in Kendall Square (right on the T) in Cambridge, and it's a lovely neighborhood.  If you want to rent, there are a ton of great apartments around (we looked at ALL of them), and there are some nice houses a little farther away from the T.  Central Square is also a nice neighborhood- convenient to shopping and restaurants and transit, but not so much hustle and bustle.
