From my post on the DC board. Sorry I can't make the links clicky (FF)
This Garden Rant post pretty much explains it:
http://www.gardenrant.com/my_weblog/2010/03/virginians-rally-to-save-extension-service.htmlHere's an excerpt:
Budget negotiations and votes start this week. Proposal HB30: Item 219 #2h did pass and is on the table to eliminate Cooperative Extension completely in Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Prince William and four other counties. Emails to legislators is NEEDED.
WHERE'S THE FIRE? Cooperative Extension JOBS would be ELIMINATED in Fairfax and Northern Virginia. Master Gardener programs, 4-H, nutrition to low income families, financial literacy and JOBS would be eliminated.
If you've ever seen a little booth with 3 staffers and 5-7 binders several inches thick at your local Farmer's Market, that's your Master Gardeners. They provide great services...for free...to the community. It would be a shame to have this & other extension programs cut.
