A friend of mine recently got engaged. She has a TON of friends in different circles, which makes planning a local wedding on a budget challenging (not to mention both sides have large families). She's been through a lot lately because her father was sick and passed away about a month ago. Due to the family and friend circumstance, she's thinking of doing a small destination wedding with a backyard BBQ kind of thing local with a much larger number of guests.
A couple of us have talked about throwing her an engagement party. We're just really excited for her and think it would be something fun despite what she's been going through for the last year. Her family is out of town... so we were thinking something just for local friends.
Is this ok? I tried to look up some etiquette stuff. It would only be people that would be invited to the local BBQ thing... but it would include people not invited to the actual wedding (which will probably be on a beach somewhere).
She has a lot of different groups of friends and I'd like to include all of the local friends so it could get large... should this be an openhouse kind of thing or more like a cocktail party? Or should we just celebrate amongst a smaller group?
Sorry this got kind of long, any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated. None of our other friends have really had engagement parties... so I'm clueless here.
Re: Engagement Party?
First off, your friend is lucky to have someone like you thinking about her and wanting to do something like this to celebrate her engagement.
I think either an open house or cocktail gathering would be great. Since they may do a BBQ for the reception, I might lean towards cocktail to mix things up. Have some beer, wine, and a signature cocktail and then a bunch of apps.
Since they arehaving a destination wedding, I think it is fine to have an engagement party and invite the people who will be invited to the reception.
I think something a little fancy, champagne and a signature cocktail, with some slightly frou-frou apps would be great!
