Missing Memory Card Reader

I'm sorry, but I don't really know all the correct lingo, but here goes.

I reset my Dell back to factory settings last Sunday. On Monday, I bought an external DVD burner. When I plugged it into my computer I noticed that it was assigned the E drive, the same as my card reader. I don't know why I didn't really pay attention at the time, but now my memory card reader is not working. It does not even show up in My Computer.

I went to Dell's site and figured out how to assign the dvd burner a new letter. I also did a system restore and updated the drives. None of this has fixed the problem.

I have an Inspiron E1505 Actually, under system properties it shows I have an I6400 Which is correct? Running Windows XP.

Does anyone know how I can correct this? Thanks so much!

Re: Missing Memory Card Reader

  • Is it an internal memory card reader?  Can you find the drivers for it on Dell's website to reinstall it?  My guess is the computer doesn't "know" it has the memory card drive and reassigned the letter to something else.  Have you tried using the drive?  Maybe putting a memory card in it will reinstall it?

If it's external, unplug it and plug it back in so the computer can recognize it, just like you did for the external DVD drive.

  • Yes it's internal. I went to Dell's site and reinstalled the drives already. I also keep trying to put the memory card in several times a day in hopes of it just working. I know the memory card is good, but I am going to have my DH bring his card home just to check.

    Any other ideas? Thanks!

  • Look for the memory card reader in device manager. I'm running Windows 7, but the process should be similar.

Right-click on My Computer and select manage, then select device manager.

Find something like "SD host adapters" (might be different on your machine).  Expand that item and see if your memory card reader shows up in there.

If it doesn't see it, then the machine doesn't recognize it anymore and it's either dead, or a cable got jiggled loose that you'll have to reattach.

If it banged out (has a ! in yellow) then the drivers are messed up - uninstall it and reinstall using the drivers you have.

If it shows up and seems happy, try uninstalling if from here anyway, then tell it to scan for hardware changes (right click on either device manager or your machine name inside of device manager to get the option).  If it finds it then the plug-n-play stuff should kick in and try to reinstall the drivers.
