Baltimore and NYC question

Sooo, we're going to the East coast at the end of the month. We fly into Baltimore, drive to Poconos, then to NJ and NYC, and back to Baltimore.

It's possible that family could take care of Evan for us to go out on a date night in NYC. Any must-dos there? (I know, it's NYC, there's tons of things, just wondering if you guys have any budget friendly faves or good recs)

Also, we have an extra day to do whatever, could be stay in NYC, go to Washington DC or just hang out in Baltimore. Any must-dos for the last two? (I've been to DC, but never to Baltimore, no idea what's to see there)

I'm sorry to post and run, I miss you all! Thanks in advance.

Re: Baltimore and NYC question

  • The Baltimore Aquarium is awesome.  And Phillips has great seafood.

ETA:  Its been like 10 years since I've been to Baltimore so take it w/ a grain of salt!

  • The Inner Harbor in Baltimore is really nice.  There is lots to do as a family and then there is the Power Plant for night life.  Here is the website http://baltimore.org/about-baltimore/inner-harbor.

When we go to NYC we usually catch a broadway show and shop.  I've had some awesome meals but it's been awhile and I can't remember a name of not a one, lol.

Sounds like you are going to have an awesome time.

BTW - I second Rachel on Phillips.  They have amazing seafood!

  • For sightseeing I prefer DC over Baltimore, but if Baltimore's easiest for you there are some things to check out.  The Inner Harbor has some shops, ships you can go on, restaurants, and the Aquarium and Science Center which are fun.  Just FYI the Aquarium is pretty pricey (IMO), and I know the Science Center charges too, but I don't remember how much it is.  I'd look into a Baltimore neighborhood guide online to see if there are any particular areas you'd be interested in seeing.  Canton has lots of cute little places (restaurants and such) to go to.  I think there's still a good selection of vintage shops along Charles Street (if you're into that sort of thing), but I haven't been in a long time so I'm not sure.  Little Italy and Fells Point are pretty close to the Inner Harbor, and I recommend checking them out.  There are a lot of little restaurants to try there (less chain restaurants, which are what primarily make up the Inner Harbor).  And, I feel that Phillips has gone downhill over the past 5-10 years.  If you're looking for seafood I'd probably look for it somewhere else.  The Powerplant area has some bars and restaurants, but it's been a few years since I was there so I know a lot of it has changed.  There are a few museums scattered throughout the city, so if you're looking for any of those I'd check online.  The urban transit system isn't that good in Baltimore, so if you have a car that'd be best for getting around.  Parking can be pricey (of course) unless you're lucky to find street parking.  Hmmm...that's all I can think of right now.  I'll add if I can think of anything else!

  • I loved when I went to the aquarium-very cool! And the Imax theatre... in Baltimore... I was there in August, but just for a bday party... pretty... I think if you're doing a 2-3 day thing, that would be fine...

You might get more out of DC or NYC, but depends on what you want to do-it's been a while since I was there...-to any of these two places...

Now... if you choose Philly... ;) That's a different story!

  • Oh-I was in NYC a few years ago and we did one of the double decker bus tours--went over to Queens, etc... THAT was pretty neat-just keep that little one covered!

We went to the MOMA-Museum of Modern Art... zzz... I've been to the Guggenheim, but if you're a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, the building's sort of interesting... Central park is pretty for a nice stroll.

Food was $$$$$ there-even at a chain place!

  • Thought of another one for Baltimore...if you're into history at all you could check out Ft. McHenry.
