affordable & family-friendly areas of town to live?

We might be relocating to Kansas City temporarily (3-4 months) early next year for MH's company. Right now, we're looking into what it would cost to rent an apartment/townhouse/house/etc. But I'm completely overwhelmed. The area is so big! Where do we even start??

Any recommendations for an area that is affordable but also family-friendly? (We have an almost 2 year old). TIA!

Re: affordable & family-friendly areas of town to live?

  • what part of KC will your dh be working in?  Family friendly areas: anywhere in Johnson County, and the Northland.  Avoid KCK and parts of KCMO.  Lees Summit is also a growing area.
  • He'll be based out of the house, so we have total freedom on where we live. That's what makes it even more overwhelming.
  • When I lived in JoCo I really liked it. There's lots to do and the schools are very good. But, it's far away from the goings ons downtown. If you like the Opera, Ballet, Theater, Concerts that kinda stuff you might want to be closer to downtown Prairie Village or Mission..etc.

I only know a little about MO. I know there are some really good areas in the Northland and by Independence Oh, Parkville is really cute too!

  • Really depends on what you want to be close to; if you want to live outside of dowtown the southern area is really growing Belton/Raymore/Peculiar area.  It is a growing part of the KC area with great schools and Belton is really starting to grow in the area of shops and restaurants.  Good Luck!
  • I would recommend Lee's Summit. Great place - tons of housing with newer neighborhoods which, to me means younger families. Excellent school district, and pretty affordable. But then, I work for the LS Economic Development Council, so I may be biased! My hubby and I are currently looking to move to LS.

  • I live in Lees Summit and we love it here. There are a few spots around the city to avoid for housing, but the majority of it is very safe and family friendly. Housing costs are similar to those all around the city. There are tons of great parks, pleanty of shopping and just an overall welcoming and wonderful place to live.
