*sigh* I broke down and bought an
organic, heirloom tomato from Mexico.
It was probably harvested by mistreated children and it tastes like nothing.
Boo.
It was my favorite kind too, the yellow with red striping.
Such disappointment. More apples and kale for me.

How do people not know when tomatoes are tasteless?!
Oh well, it helps to keep me on track with eating seasonal and local!
They've never had an herloom tomato grown by someone who cares about growing tomatoes, like from a Farmer's Market. So all they've ever had are the idential sized, identical shaped, sour-water tasting tomatoes from the supermarket or served at a restaurant. When I waited tables at an upscale restaurant in D.C., we got a ton of our "heriloom tomato salads" (labled that way on.the.menu) returned because "OMG the tomatoes are purple!" (or yellow or green or whatever). Same goes for fingerling potato salads "These potatoes are rotten!" No, they're just purple, that's how they're supposed to be.
This happens at the farmer's market too. I noticed my favorite vendor didn't bring as many japanese eggplants this year as last year, so I asked her about it. She said they didn't sell well and nobody knew what they were, because they weren't the dark purple italian eggplants you see at the supermarket. So they planted less japanese eggplants this year
But the Japanese are the best kind! I don't even eat the "regular" eggplants anymore cuz they don't taste as good.
Sad day.
They are!! I am so glad someone told me how good they are. I've never really liked regular eggplant (although I think that has to do with how its cooked, because I do like eggplant hummus) but I LOVE the bright purple one with the thinner skin.
PV, I'll eat your share of tomatoes!
I don't really like tomatoes (even the ones we've grown) so it doesn't make a difference to me. I just eat them 'cause I know they're healthy and try to ignore the taste.
that sucks alisha...but hey at least one my long lost relatives made a nickel...hahahaha.
one of my client's is a farmer out here and he invited me to his farm on saturday to pick out any veggies i want! i'm so stoked...they are totally into organic farming.
we are going to plant some tomatoes and cukes on our lanai...i can't wait!
lmao hus! That sounds so fun! Take pics of your trip!!
Tambcat....what do you mean?
