MN Vines

For the past three years we have planted morning glory vines on our trellis' on our deck. I love the morning glories, the only problem is I am not a morning person and needless to say, they are only glorious in the morning. :) I get to see them all closed up in hiding. Also, when we have visitors out for dinner on the deck, the vines aren't that pretty either.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for flowering, climbing vines for MN. Annuals or perennials...I don't have a preference. If it is an annual, the faster they grow the better. They are in an area where we'd like to keep bees away..we've typically done red or white morning glories but we really don't care on the color. My mom swears by red scaring the bees away. They are also near the dog kennel (if that makes a difference)

Thanks!!

Re: MN Vines

  • Clematis are a favorite flowering vine here in WI but they prefer sun.  Otherwise if the area is shady try a climbing hydrangea.  The only other vine I can think of that grows well around here is honeysuckle but it really isn't a pretty in my opinion since it has such small blooms (plus I have over a dozen honeysuckle bushes thanks to the birds around here).

If I lived in a warmer climate I'd plant a passion fruit vine in a heartbeat.

  • You could always do moon flower. They're similar to morning glory but the flowers open in the evening. Ipomea is the genus name. Though it may take a couple of years for them to really establish themselves where you are.

  • I buy a mandevilla every year and let it sprawl up my trellis.  It's tropical and will die back at first frost.

This year I brought it in for winter b/c they are expensive (about $50 for a decent size one in the Spring). Hopefully it bounces back when I take it outside.

  • We have jasmine in pots.  They thrive in the spring/summer/fall on our sunny patio, however bringing them in in the winter stinks...they lose leaves and such, but perk right back up come spring.
