housewarming

FI are I are planning to have a housewarming party in either April or June. Would it be totally tacky to do it potluck style or ask people to bring sides/desserts? We of course would supply drinks, entrees, and appetizers.

Re: housewarming

  • I think it depends on your circle.  Have other people done this in the past?

For me and my friends/family - it would seem a little strange.  As a guest, I'm probably bring you a bottle of wine or welcome mat or house plant as a housewarming gift, so I would think it's a little off to be asked to bring food.

    HTH!

  • Honestly, yeah......it does seem pretty tacky to throw a party for yourself while asking your guests to provide the food for it.

Potluck really only works (IMO) when the event is neutral.........no one claims it as "their" party.  A housewarming paty isn't a neutral event.

You could have a BBQ that wouldn't require much in the way of sides, and do a few really simple appetizers and desserts.

Ditto 100%.  I'm firmly in the camp of "guests shouldn't have to bring anything but themselves."  They're not really guests, otherwise.
