My husband and I are from Massachusetts...We are thinking of going on a vacation to the Grand Canyon area for four or five days...Where should we stay? What is the weather like? Ideas of things to do? We've never been! Thank you!
Re: Grand Canyon?
The Grand Canyon is amazing and definitely something everyone should see. But unless you plan to hike a lot, there isn't a TON to do up there. My suggestion would be to also take a couple of those days and visit Sedona, which is full of red rock formations and is simply unlike any other place you've ever seen. Personally, I think it is just as beautiful - if not more so - than the Grand Canyon. Sedona is basically a couple hours south of the Grand Canyon (basically halfway between Phoenix and the GC). There are a couple of fun shopping areas, you could do a jeep tour, more hiking, nice restaurants, etc.
The weather in Sedona is usually about 10-15 degrees cooler than whatever it is in Phoenix, and it's maybe another 10 degrees cooler than that at the Grand Canyon. It depends on what time of year you go, but the mornings at the Grand Canyon are usually very cool, and then it warms up throughout the day.
As for where to stay, there are only a couple of hotels within the actual park, and they are pricey and book up far in advance. I'd recommend staying at a hotel outside of the national park area (maybe a 10-minute drive away). You can get a better deal and you'll be much closer to restaurants, gas stations, drug stores, etc.
Hope that helps! Enjoy your trip!
I agree with PP. Unless you are planning on hiking hte grand canyon and campin gin the bottom of it...you really dont need to spend 4-5 days there.
I would make your stay at Sedona you can see soooo much more there and hit up Jerome as well!
Woo Jerome (and Cottonwood)!!! Absolute must while you're up that way!
Can't wait to meet my baby boy!
Yes, I LOVE Jerome. Such a gem. Nothing beats that drive up the mountain to get to it/from it! Prescott is a cute town, too. I just went there for the first time a couple of months ago and had a lot of really good food there.
