Running shoes?

Can anyone tell me a good place to go get a pair of running shoes? I want a place that will help me pick the right type of shoes b/c I get awful shin splints and I want to start a running program soon.

Thanks!

Re: Running shoes?

  • I only know Road Runner Sports (I know there is one in Tualatin) but if anyone knows a more local place, instead...I'd suggest that (to support the local guys!). Make sure you get fit (which it sounds like you are) and they test your gait while running...it will make a huge difference!

    Good luck!

  • My husband really likes Fit Right which just moved to NW 22nd and Raleigh. Portland Running on SE Grand is another good spot to check out.

  • I have been to Fit Right NW a few times and have been very pleased. The new one in NW hasa little mini indoor track, treadmills, and they'll let you take shoes outside to try on. Also they have a 30 day return policy. Wanted to try Road Runner a few weeks back, but could not get anyone to help me, let alone greet me. I ended up leaving. You defintely ought to have someone help you pick the right shoes, right off the bat. If you're not familiar with your gait, etc. you could end up buying a pair of shoes that are all sorts of wrong and end up hurting yourself even more. And since you already have a problem with shin splints they could probably help you pick a great shoe. HTH
  • Hubby loves Fit Right.  Although I cringe at the cost, he's big into running and loves the customer service.
  • I like Portland Running Company on Grand vs. Fit Right.

  • I go to Fit Right NW for my running shoes. I like that they record your gait so you can play it back slowly. It's much easier to see what your feet are doing in slow-motion. When I went to visit other local stores, they didn't seem to have that kind of set-up, but I may be wrong. The people there are very helpful, and their new store is really spacious.
  • Thanks for all the input. Is Fit Right pricey? I'm not looking to spend over $100

Most will probably cost you around that...tell them you price range, though. I did that once and got the "last year model" pair of shoes that were the same as the "current year" but  a different color-saved me about $30!

    This!! Love PRC.

  • I have bought shoes from Portland Running Company and Road Runners and thought both were pretty good. Portland Running Company just watches you run on the sidewalk while Road Runners has a fancy treadmill/video camera system to determine what type of shoe you need.

Just tell them your budget - each brand carries less expensive and more expensive models. I have a friend who runs in $50-$60 Asics because she just runs short distances around the neighborhood, but I wear the $90 version because I run half-marathons and need more cushion, etc. Another thing to remember is that you need to replace your shoes every 300-500 miles (not sure if that is what is causing your shin splints, but it might help!)
