Restaurant/Activity Recommendations

Hey ladies, I don't post on here, but I need some local questions answered!I'm not from TX.  My H is joining the Air Force, so we will be around San Antonio sometime later this year when he graduates.   I'm looking for some good places to eat in the San Antonio area while he has a pass to go off base.  Chinese food (take-out, good but not expensive), steakhouses, great local places.  He can eat like a horse, so I want to have plans!  Also, are there any "must-do" activities while we are there?Thank you so much!

  • Seriously? No helpers?
  • This board is not very active (just started picking up recently), so it might take a while for people to chime in. You could check out the post below called Best SA Restaurants for some other recs.

I very rarely eat out, and when I do it's usually at the same places (and most of them chain restaurants, haha), so I'm not really the best to ask for recs but I'll try anyway. Hmm...

Rudy's BBQ is pretty famous around here. They have some pretty good BBQ for cheap prices. There are locations all over the city.

If you like beer, you can check out Flying Saucer near the med center. I don't know how many beers they have there, but it's a lot (like easily over 100). I've only ordered food once (an appetizer) and it was decent.

If you feel like splurging (around $35 per person for the base cost of the buffet) and love meat, there's a Brazilian steakhouse called Chama Gaucha that is just amazing. It was seriously one of the best restaurants I've ever been too. All of the food was delicious and the service was outstanding.

For Chinese I always just go to P.F. Chang's or Pei Wei (cheap version of P.F. Chang's), so I don't know of any good local places.

I love Logan's Roadhouse for their to-die-for dinner rolls. I could eat those buttery rolls all night long.

I also love Red Robin for a great burger and fries, but it's a chain so it's nothing super special.

As far as things to do.... I guess you could consider The Alamo and the Riverwalk as the must do's of the city.  If you like theme parks, you could also check out Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Sea World (they are closed during parts of the year though so you'd have to check the calendars for when you'll be here).  I wouldn't say it's a must-do necessarily, but there are some other nice places you could visit like the Missions, McNay Museum and Witte Museum.

Anyway, I know that's not a huge help but hopefully some of the other girls will respond soon with some good ideas.

  • We've curbed our eating out, so I don't really know what to tell you on steakhouses. I've heard that Chama Gaucha is excellent as pp said. I don't really eat Chinese that much so I've got no recs for that. LOVE Godai for sushi. Rudy's is good local BBQ, too. Don't eat at any of the Mexican places on the riverwalk because they all suck. :P Rosario's is pretty good Mexican if you're staying downtown. The Guenther House is a cute place to do breakfast/brunch as well downtown. If you're here during the 1st Friday of the month, you could do 1st Friday down on St. Mary's/South Alamo (never remember the exact street) and check out local art. If you like beer, stop in the Blue Star brewery for locally brewed beer. The Witte Museum just opened a new dinosaur exhibit that would probably be neat. I'd definitely stop to see the Alamo just to see it, but don't expect too much out of it! The missions are also interesting. You could always go to a spurs game even though it's a rough year. :( If you're interested in anything else you may hear about, just ask!
