rain barrel questions

we are thinking of getting 1 or 2 but have some questions

1- what do you do in the winter with them? (if you live where it snows)

2- how long does it usually take a 55 gal one to fill up?

3- are they usually pretty easy to connect two together?

4- you have to cut the downspout to install them correct?

Re: rain barrel questions

  • 1. Ours stay where it is. No problems doing that. Never even thought of bringing it in or anything.

    2. Ours has never filled up and we have had it for almost 2 years.

    3. The kind we have are easy to connect together. There is a spot on each one to do this.

    4. The first summer ours wasn't hooked up to the downspout (never got around to it). We did last year and yah we had to cut the downspot and move it up to have it sit above the rain barrell. If you can cut it then do it as you will get more water this way.

  • 1 - we bring ours in the garage, but you can just flip them over

    2 - couple weeks

    3 - I haven't tried this

4 - we used a diverter that allows us to bypass when the barrel is full, and it's nice for winter when we remove it.  we put the barrel up on blocks, and let the downspout with extension run under it.  like this

  • 1.  when it gets very cold (it has been a cold winter here in NC) Dh usually just opens the spout and lets some water out each day before it freezes solid.  Knock on wood, it has frozen solid but hasn't exploded or anything

    2.  For us, 2 hard rains can fill our 55 gal

    3.  Ours has a connector area, which would make connecting two easy.

    4.  our downspout was thankfully already cut, so we were able to just re-direct the hose to our barrel

Also, just keep in mind that different barrels have their spouts in different parts of the barrel.  Ours is towards the bottom of the barrel, so we have ours up on cinder blocks so that we can get buckets underneath the spout.  I'd hate for you to have a full 55 gallon barrel and not be able to get any water from it!  Ours was also an old syrup or pickle barrel, so I'm glad we found a way to give this barrel a new pupose.
