what's your favorite cast iron pot/pan?

As a gift to myself for getting a job (which I start MONDAY eeek), I'm going to buy myself some sort-of cast iron pot or pan...so what's your favorite? Over the next year or two we want to phase out our nonstick, but we're taking it slow...we did find a great stainless steel pot at Goodwill a few weeks ago which was awesome :) But, I really want something Cast Iron...however...I know NOTHING about it. I'd prefer it not to be coated with anything -- is that possible?

TIA!

Re: what's your favorite cast iron pot/pan?

  • We got a lot of Le Crueset when we got married. DH has some really nice/generous family friends.

Our non-enamel are Lodge. We love them as well. We actually got a friend an enamel lodge and they love it. They are a much better price point than LC

  • I've been happy with my Lodge 12" skillet.

  • We have this one, from Emerilware:

I use Calphalon stainless steel for most of my cooking, but I like cast iron for things like eggs, pancakes, and baking deep dish pizza.

  • Another vote for Lodge.  My MIL gave us a skillet and a wok and we love them both.
  • Good Will!!!!!  :)
  • My favorite cast iron skillet was purchased at an antique store. My mom bought it and seasoned it for me. :-)  I have no idea what brand it is.

I never hear any complaints about Lodge cast iron.

You can buy unesasoned Lodge pretty much anywhere.  I used to live next to an outlet mall and they had a store there, where I bought a starter kit of lots of different pots and pans.  I bought my 12" Lodge on Amazon.

For two of us, I mostly use the 8" and 10" skillet.  What I use on a daily basis is the griddle (toast; baking bread; sandwiches; pancakes; baking frozen foods, cookies, etc.).  I only occasionally use the 6" and 12" skillets and the dutch oven.

    Good Will!!!!!  :)

omg i've been searching four...yes FOUR goodwill stores in the area with no luck....for the last few months! i keep checking but i'm getting to the point where i'm thinking it's not going to happen...i think since thrift stores are SO huge here, it's like people rush in when the put the new stuff out and grab it all.

    thanks everyone for the suggestions!

  • For pots, I could not do without my two enameled Le Creuset French ovens. I also have a LC pan (it's coated, but not enameled) that I use all the time and a smaller antique, uncoated CI that is seasoned beautifully.
  • We have a CI skillet, and enamel pan and dutch oven, all from Lodge.  We're extremely happy with them.  We can't afford Le Creuset.  Our CI skillet is so well-seasoned now you can make eggs and pancakes in it. Yes
