What SC stereotypes do you think are generally wrong? Which do you think are generally accurate?
Do you get upset by the stereotypes that people make about South Carolinians?
What states do you think are worse than SC?
Re: SC Stereotypes
Stereotypes I find to be true:
Southern people have a deep accent. Many people also say they butcher English too. While I agree some people here do butcher it, not all of them do, so I say no to that part of the stereotype.
People in South Carolina are poor drivers. Good Lord help me...just terrible.
Southern people are slower paced.
Stereotype I don't agree with:
Southern people are extremely friendly. No, they are passive aggressive.
Southern Belles -- I have yet to see one exist.
Of all the states I've been to/lived in, I think Ohio has equivalently poor drivers and Tennessee somehow has worse.
In general, I think New Jersey is the worst state, just period lol.
I think the biggest stereotype that I have encountered is true...that people in South Carolina are generally a very religious group. It's a huge part of the culture here...whereas in Boston, it's not (or at least, I don't think it was).
SC drivers are an interesting bunch, but I don't think they're any worse than Boston drivers.
People are generally friendly, but I don't think they are any more friendly or inviting than people in Boston.
I've lived in SC since I was 9 months old, and my family is very southern, so I feel like I can say this with a lot of accuracy
We do have southern accents. But, I hate when people think that the redneck/hick accent is the southern accent. It is not.
People think that we are dumb because our test scores are low. As a teacher, I know that not every state test is the same. SC has high standards for state testing, and that causes our scores to be lower. There are some counties and districts that do poorly, but many are at or above the national average. This stereotype makes my blood boil.
We are obsessed with football- generally true!
Bad drivers- true, but I haven't driven in many other states, so I'm not sure how we truly compare. I would hate to think that it could be worse.
Which states are worse? I would hate to live up north, but really just because I couldn't handle the cold weather up there! I have no problem with northerners otherwise.

I am not from here (from MI) and haven't been here all that long and I have already found some of these things to be very true...
For instance, people in SC are horrible drivers and not to mention very rude drivers. But hudysgirl is right when she says that OH has bad drivers as well because up until I moved here, I considered them to be the worst drivers in the country! But back to drivers here....they don't allow you to merge into traffic, they speed like no other (but apparently the cops don't care, which I guess is a good thing) and they don't acknowledge an emergency vehicle coming through (I have seen 1 person the entire time I've been pull off to the side to let an ambulance through).
It is definitely a slower pace here, but I actually like it and I have to disagree with you hudysgirl when you say that people are more passive agressive then friendly down here. I have found (most) people to be extremely outgoing and friendly down here. People up North are not like that and that is one of the first things I've noticed since being here...I actually really appreciate it!
I also think NJ is the worst and they can back it up...I've never met someone from there that isn't rude, full of themselves and careless.
People are friendly here. I agree. I love our friends here a lot more than our friends who we had for 10 years in Boston. I don't have to work so hard with people here- people reach out and are generally welcoming.
I disagree that SC is soooo much cheaper to live in.
I agree that education is lacking. And I find it unnerving how many people ride bikes along busy streets and who ride motorcycles with no helmets.
I disagree that is is more segregated and racially tense than the northeast. I find it no more or no less segregated, bigoted, and racist than Boston.
Drivers here suck in a different way than in Boston.
I agree that people see their dogs very differently down here, but that is a southern thing in general. My Boston ACO would have burst every blood vessel from his neck up if he ever, ever saw a dog chained outside. The ACOs here don't give two_shits. "It's the way of life..." they say. WTF ever.
I'm a native, but I've lived abroad and in other states, so I'm able to do this a bit objectively.
Stereotypes that are true:
We have accents, but I agree that there's a huge difference between a Southern accent and a redneck accent. Also, SC has very distinct regional accents, and we're all very proud of them.
We're the only state I've ever seen advertise itself to itself.
By and large, we're very friendly as a state.
The driving thing...I'm from Greenville, went to college in Spartanburg and lived in Columbia for a few years after college. I never bought into the "South Carolinians can't drive" bit until I lived in Spartanburg and then Columbia. They're just slow in Spartanburg and certified bonkers in Columbia, ranging from driving like a blind 90 year old to driving like they're in Grand Theft Auto. I've never seen anything like it and I've felt my blood pressure decrease dramatically since moving.
Stereotypes that are untrue:
Our educational system is not crap, at least not in Greenville.
We are not hicks. Just take one walk around downtown Charleston or Greenville and you'll be able to figure that out.
I don't really get upset about the stereotypes. I think that they say more about the person saying them than they do about SC. I do, however, cringe when I mention that I'm from SC and someone says something about how they've been there because they've been to Myrtle Beach. That's really not SC and if we could give it to NC, I would gladly do so.
States worse than SC...NJ, hands down.
