Newbie Flower Help!

We're recentl moved to Oklahoma City, and are moving into a new home in a couple months--I'd love to plant some flowers. However, I'm clueless as where to start!

I'd love to plant country-like, "field of flower" kind of mix; sunflowers, black-eyed susan, lavender...flowers of that nature.

Can anyone provide direction and additional flowers that I may like?

From a total newbie, THANK YOU! Smile

Re: Newbie Flower Help!

  • If you have friends/family/co-workers ask if their gardens need thinning.  I ended up with a full blooming flower garden my 1st summer by everyone donating 1-2 plants from their plots.  I used a little miracle grow couple times a month--plants more than doubled in size by summer's end.  Asking people to donate also works well b/c you know the plants will grow in your area.  I had former co-worker give me a few plants as a housewarming gift; another option.

  • You should check your Department of Natural resources or local gardening clubs, etc. for a list of native plants.  You'll get some nice flowering plants that won't require a lot of work to make them grow well in your soil/climate.
