Digital SLR cameras

I am in the market to purchase a digital SLR camera. I know I am going to stick with Canon- but they have (obviously) many models.

How do you start determining what is the best camera to suit your needs?

Should I buy the body only, or get the kit?

How do I even know what lens I need? (Looking for everyday, macro, zoom, external flash)

Are there any online tutorials/websites you used to help determine what camera best suits your needs?

ETA: I will be using this camera for food photography, as well as for vacation (photos of flowers, beaches, people, panoramic views).

Re: Digital SLR cameras

  • I am a loyal canon user.  I got my rebel years ago, and got the camera wtih the kit lens, but I've heard it's sometimes better to get body only and skip the kit lens.  For food photography, I highly recommend the 50mm F1.8 lens (which now has a big brother).  But you will still need another lens for everyday shooting.

DPreview.com is a great website for reviews on the different models... here is their canon list. They also review lenses.

For external flash, I highly recommend the Canon speedlite 430EX (which I Think is now only available in the big brother (430EX II) version).

Thanks TPOX.What lens do you use for "everyday" use? Do you also have a lens for zooming?
