Where would you look to figure out what kind of houseplant you have?

My grandparents are moving out of their home and into a retirement condo.  They gave away tons of stuff, including some houseplants.  Well, either my mom or grandma told my husband that one of the plants might be toxic.  I have two small dogs that will eat anything, so I'm obviously concerned about them eating fallen leaves.

How can I find out if this plant is toxic?  Where do I look?  I don't have a name, anything, just a plant sitting next to me.
