makeup

Ladies with oily/sensitive skin:

What foundation/concealer do you use? I've been using physician's formula mineral wear for years now and I'm ready to try something new. My face is just one big nasty, disgusting greaseball and I'm so tired of it!!! Makeup literally slides off after about 2-3 hours. I can't be bothered with blotting/powdering every 5 effing minutes, but I need the coverage because I also have acne scarring and blemishes. Anyone else have this problem or found a way to control it aside from cutting off my face and trading with someone who hasn't had a terrible complexion their whole life? *le sigh*

Re: makeup

  • I have oily and flaky patches.  I use Clinique Super-Balanced Foundation.  I also use Neutrogena Combination Skin lotion under that.

In the summer I add Smashbox Photo Finish in the middle.

I've been doing this for at least 6 years now, and I can manage the grease slicks pretty well.  For special events, I do use the blotting paper.

  • I tend to have oily skin in the summer.  My skin is sensitive all the time though (lucky me LOL).  I use Bare Minerals when I don't need a lot of coverage, or a full-face of makeup for the majority of the day.  It doesn't last the whole day on me though, especially if I'm having an "oily" day...then it can come off pretty quickly.  However, for full coverage (I have some acne, scaring, and redness as well) that lasts all day I have started using Revlon Colorstay foundation.  I apply it with a stippling brush (I got one at Target, Studio Tools line), so it uses the least amount of foundation but gives a nice air-brushed effect.  I alternate using the normal/dry and oily/combination skin formulas depending on what I need.  The oily/combo formula really does last all day on me without budging, and helps keep most oil at bay.  The foundation kind of adheres to your skin, so be prepared to use a separate makeup remover before cleansing your skin to ensure you get it all off and don't cause breakouts.  If you wanted to try something a little more high-end, I've also had good experiences with Makeup Forever foundations...they have a few different formulas and all last a long time and keep skin looking balanced.

Not sure what kind of skin care regimen you have, but I know that my severe oiliness only started to be controlled by treating my skin and not my acne.  I have to use sensitive skin products and moisturizing ones (I use jojoba oil) to balance my skin and get oil production back under control.  It's made a big difference for me.  My skin is so much better now.

  • I have oily, sensitive skin and rosacea... yah me.  (which just started a few yrs ago, but am now getting treatment).  I've tried a ton of stuff, but I, too, use Bare Minerals-I use the matte foundation.  It does cover, but I do have to reapply a little later.

I had been treating my 'wrinkles yet to come', but now have to try something else-dr's orderes... not liking it-but they started me on antibiotics for the rosacea.  We'll see if it works.  I was orig using a mild soap-cetafil, then I was cleaning it with something from clinique, then I used moisturizer from Revlon-revitalift-which I am liking their eye cream.

I will always do a sheer 'final' cover on my makeup, but my eyeshadows do 'fade' unless I use MAC or something fairly decent.  Would you believe I just heard that putting contact lense solution on your eyelids helps keep the eyeshadow there?  hm... have yet to try that.

    GL!

  • I've tried all the acne stuff and found that I need to treat my skin also. Wish I would have know that when I was 11! Cetaphil makes me break out like crazy (go figure). I actually find that my skin stays healthiest when I wear makeup daily, but that also means it's an oily makeup mud puddle by the end of the day. And since I've been unemployed for a year, I don't wear it often unless I go somewhere. I use an avon cleanser - for me, it doesn't matter so much which cleanser I use (unless it's friggen cetaphil), aveeno calming daily moisturizer, and I use a sloughing scrub daily. I know that can be irritating, but for me, it's necessary. I'm thinking the culprit may be my concealer. I use covergirl neutralizing concealer stick, but find that I need way more than I should lately, it's becoming like a foundation! The mineral foundation does not stay on well enough throughout the day and I need the concealer to make sure I have coverage. I've tried bare minerals and it made me break out terribly. I also didn't like that it had the little shiny/sparkly pieces in it, I have enough shine thanks.

Veruca, where do you get jojoba oil? I think I'll try the colorstay, I've seen the commercials for it and thought about it. I just haven't used liquid makeup since high school! This should be an adventure. Thanks ladies!

I get jojoba oil at Trader Joe's....a decent size bottle is only like $7 and can last a long time (I also use a drop on my hair after getting out of the shower to help condition).  I use the Oil Cleansing Method a few times a week to help calm my skin and deep clean (info: www.theoilcleansingmethod.com)...this is primarily how I use the jojoba oil.  You could also try another type of oil.  I've read that sunflower and safflower oils are also very close to the skin's natural oils and work well.  Or, there's always olive oil.  I've seen a large selection of oils at places like Whole Foods.

For the Colorstay- it definitely takes some getting used to, especially when, like you, I have been wearing mineral makeup for a long time.  It dries pretty quickly, so only apply one section of your face at a time.  Start with a little, let dry, and then reapply as needed/desired for coverage.  I prefer the coverage/finish when using a stippling brush, but you can also use a sponge or your fingers.  I don't need a separate concealer when using this foundation.  Just be sure to use a specific makeup remover before you cleanse.  I didn't at first and noticed I started to breakout.  But, when I started using cold cream (and oil cleansing method), I noticed that the breakouts went away, so it was just from not cleansing my skin well enough, not from the foundation.

And, I thought this might be helpful for you as well....I really started researching which ingredients are comedogenic in skin care products to see what could be triggering my acne.  I came across this article and reference list, and it's been really helpful for me.

  • I was introduced to Smashbox Camera Ready Full Coverage Foundation before my wedding and it has been a God send.  I have had HORRIBLE skin most of my life, nothing seems to help it (even mineral makeup), but once I started using this it cleared up.  I am not sure if there is something in it that actually helps clear my skin or if it DOESNT have something in it that other makeups do, but it works.  I usually can't use the cream to powder formulas because it never gets to the powder phase and I end up a greasy slimy mess.  I have never had that problem with this makeup.  The first time I used it the girl at Sephora scooped some out of the compact to make a sample for me to take home, its worth a shot if they will do that for you too so you can try it out.  Good luck!
  • I had really greasy . . . we are talking nasty greasy . . . skin for most of my life.  My current doctor stopped that by putting me on Minocycline.  Its a low dose Tetracycline derivative, and it helped to dry up my skin.  I also used Accutane a few years ago with great success.  I still get breakouts, but now they are limited and not as painful.

I use powder only, and generally just the MAC loose powders.  I find that by using a foundation my skin gets more greasy, and with the powder my skin stays dry.

Talk to your doctor about what you can do to help.  My doc said you have to treat severe acne from within.
