Does anyone know anything about rubber? Does it leach chemicals? How does it compare to plastic? Particularly using it for a water hose to water plants...DH is setting up a self watering container garden for our veggies and is trying to be EF about it...he was considering buying a rubber tubing for the water but doesn't want to if it's going to possibly leach chemicals...
Re: Rubber?
I have read a little about rubber, but not in awhile, so I wasn't going to respond. But, since no one else has, maybe my smidge of knowledge will help... Natural rubber seems to be considered EF. There are also recycled synthetic rubber options that can be considered EF, even some particularly for landscaping (rubber mulch).
As for gardening, I have not heard anything about needing drinking quality hoses for veggies (I believe these are made from polyurethane). Plants are amazing at filtering out crud. For example, most people probably do not use lead-free hoses to water their gardens, water from rain barrels and the sky have pollutants, etc. Using rubber for watering seems to be pretty common.
