Birmingham

We are about 2 hrs. from Birmingham.  What is there to do for a weekend?  Tired of going to Nashville.  Just wanting something different?  Places to eat, shopping, movies, hotels and maybe spa?

Re: Birmingham

  • 2 hours in what direction?
AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • Are you asking what is there to do in Birmingham?

They have shopping at The Summit, which is on 280.  It also has a few restaurants you can eat at, as well as a movie theater.  In Birmingham there are also alot of places to eat in 5 points south, and you can also walk around the streets on a nice day. On the north side of town is the Museum of Art (free admission) and McWane Center ($12 if I remember correctly).

    Siggy coming soon....
  • I'm assuming that you're 2 hours north since you drive into nashville... I think downtown probably offers the most to you.

Would you be planning to stay for the weekend? I'm not sure what you and your SO like to do, but these are some of mine and my dh's favorite places to go:

See movies at the Alabama Theatre

Catch concerts at Workplay or Sloss Furnace

Get a martini and a cigar from Blue Monkey Lounge

Go play at the McWane Center and the Museum of Art

If you're willing to drive a little further, Barber's Vintage Motorsports Museum is really cool, and the races are AWESOME. If you catch a race, be sure to bring a blanket or chairs and a cooler with drinks because instead of grandstands, you actually sit on the side of the hill. It's a really cool concept. The concession stands are all the way over by the crow's nest so unless you're walking distance from the paddock and all that, you'll want to bring your own food and stuff.

ETA: I just saw that you're interested in a spa. I don't know first hand, but I've heard that the golf resort (what's its name again? I forget -- the one in hoover) has an excellent one.

One of my favorite places to eat is Dodiyo's in SoHo. It's a greek restaurant with a WONDERFUL atmosphere, delicious food, and awesome drinks. The best part is that it's a stone's throw from most of the stuff downtown.

  • The spa love.wins mentioned is Ross Bridge, and totally worth checking out.

If you are outdoorsy you could hike at Oak Mountain State Park.

I also second the Blue Monkey for martinis, and if you are into food, downtown has many great options: Ocean, Hot & Hot Fish Club, Highlands Bar and Grill, Twenty Six, etc.

What direction are you coming from? We can also rec things along the way.
