Don't tell me it's going to get below freezing.
I live in the pacific NW. We've been lucky this winter. The newscasters have been talking about our "Early Spring" for 6 weeks now. Daffodils and hyacinths are blooming, along with some of the groundcover flowers (vinca and some kind of geranium). The greens on the tulips and lilies are getting lush. Those have been in my garden for years and are indestructible. However, I just planted dahlia tubers. Do you think that they are okay if they are freshly planted? I worry that they don't have the strength if they are just starting. It should not be a hard freeze... just dipping to 30. I also just transplanted two roses. They have new growth (the little red leaves), as well as establishing their roots in a new place.
What would you do? Pick as many as you like or add your own:
1) Nothing - it'll all be fine
2) Pull up dahlia tubers and put them inside
3) Throw compost over dahlia tubers and around roses
4) Wrap roses with a sheet/blanket
Thanks for your ideas.
Re: Oh no! Advice, please
2 if you can, then 3. And definitely 4
Not sure how your dahlia tubers will do. I live in northeast PA and every article said to wait until it was good and warm to plant them. Since we can't put anything in until around Mother's Day, the dahlias didn't go in until June.
I had one rose I put in in the fall, and I covered it my first winter. It's doing great now.
Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010
Don't drink the water.
