First House, First Lawn

Hello!  Normally I post over in S&R/BAH, but I need some gardening and lawn expertise, so I thought I'd come over this way.

DH and I bought our first house in September.  It sits on about an acre and is mostly lawn, with the exception of a cluster of trees in one corner that shelter a very old family (not our family) burial plot.  I want to do some landscaping in the border along the front of our house, so I was out doing a walk-through and taking photos this morning.  What I found was not encouraging.

Our lawn is in less than fantastic shape.  I guess that's part and parcel of the house not being lived in for at least a year before we bought it.  A considerable amount of the lawn is not grass, like I thought, but is grass interspersed with a variety of creeping groundcover (I recognized creeping raspberry, but it's not the only one).  There's no rhyme or reason to it -- it looks as though what the previous owners planted in the border got a mind of its own and flourished in random places all over the yard.

Is there a way for us to fix this?  Can we just reseed or are we going to need to do a lot of removal work to get rid of the groundcover?  There are a couple of spots where I actually want to use creeping raspberry, but definitely NOT where I've found it!

Sorry for the novel, but I'd appreciate any advice.

Re: First House, First Lawn

  • Did some googling... Looks like we should have seeded back in September when we first moved in.  I'm going to just focus on taking care of our landscaping along the front of the house and the trees we're getting from the Arbor Day Foundation.  We'll re-evaluate the lawn issue when fall rolls back around.
