Followed This Old House Advice

So five years ago when we bought this house I went and bought a ton of flowers to plant, and they all died.  Last year I read an article in This Old House about planting Spring bulbs in the Fall.  So I took the advice and planted a ton of bulbs in September...and it worked!!!  I have sprouts everywhere!  I am so excited!

Re: Followed This Old House Advice

  • I am soooooo incredibly jealous. My H and I have been talking for THREE years about planting flowers and making the yards look nice and we've done nothing. We don't even know where to start and everytime we talk about it, we realize it's too late to do anything.
  • Whoa!  That's so cool!  I have always wanted to plan bulbs but I am too scared that I'll do it wrong.  Post a pic when they bloom!
  • I love bulbs and think they are the easiest thing ever for gardens.  You just toss a bunch in the ground in the fall before the frost comes, cover them with soil, and let them sit all winter.  Then they let you know when spring arrives because they are always the first things to pop out of the ground.  Aside from putting them in the ground you don't really have to do much of anything.

  • That's great!  I'm so looking forward to having a yard.  Admittedly, I'm not sure what I can accomplish with it, but fortunately DH and his whole family are all excellent green thumbs.
  • I love bulbs. Glad they are coming up, hope the deer don't get em.

Every year I pick up a couple bags at Christmas Tree Shop in the fall and plant them at my mom's house on the Cape.  I just toss em in the air and then plant them where the fall so they look "natural".  I can't wait to get down there in a couple weeks to see how they are coming up.  I've planted them for three years now, about 60-80 bulbs each time, so it should be awesome :).

    Got to love the Tree.
