my thumb is not that green..I need advise.
So my husband and I have been trying to think of what to do with our front and back garden...I really love lillies especially Calla Lily. And we saw some bulbs..when is the best time to plant the bulbs? I have tried planting stuff before and nothing really ever worked. We do live in Cleveland, OH...so please help with any ideas. thank you.
Re: my thumb is not that green..I need advise.
What kind of things did you plant before? Gardening is a trial and error hobby in a lot of ways. You plant one thing and may disvover you don't like it, or it doesn't like the spot you placed it. The first question you need answered before planting is: How much sun does the planting area recieve? After you figure out how much sun the planting area gets, you can pick plants that are suitable for that amount of sunlight.
I do plant lilies (mainly asiatic lilies), but I don't have any experience planting callas. I believe callas require a bit of a more warmer climate to grow. You could plant them, but they'll require that you lift them (pull out of the ground) each year. I'm a lazy gardener, so I don't buy plants I need to lift each year. You can plant lily bulbs now if the ground is not frozen.
As to what to plant, my suggestion is to get a local gardening book that will list everything that works well in your zone. A book like this would be helpful to a new gardener. Also, look at magazines and websites like HGTV Rate My Space, Better Homes and Gardens for inspiration.
That is all really good advise, thank you. And I'm not sure what I want to plant..I like a good amount of color, not to much to overload or to over-shadow the house. I will just have to do alot of research and go to a nursery and talk to them and see what they also suggest
