I am looking to buy my first and I am a complete novice, but willing to learn. What would one rec. for me to purchase?

I have a Nikon D3000. It is a great entry level SLR. It has an onboard guide that really helps explain some of the features. Also if you lurk on the photography board a little it can be VERY helpful!
