This has been happening since I bought it a year ago, though it seems to have gotten worse.
When I first got the computer, no discs would load and we figured out the disc country setting wasnt correct so we fixed that, and some discs worked. It seemed that any scratched (even slightly) discs would not play, but others would - I managed to install a few programs from disc, and uploaded some music from cds.
Recently, I have noticed that nothing will load. You insert the disc, hear it thinking a bit, and then it pops the disc back out. I have only tried with cds and dvds lately, as I have no programs I want to load.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening or how to fix it? I thought it was just super sensitive and wouldnt play anything scratched or dirty, but all the stuff ive tried playing recently has been new straight out of the package never been touched.
Thanks!
Re: iMac - wont play discs
Sounds like your laser gone bad.
Do you have AppleCare? If so call them and they will take care of it under warranty. Otherwise just have a new drive installed, that should take care of the problem. If you wanted to save some money you could get an external drive.

Not sure if I have Applecare - I bought it online through Futureshop here in Canada. I originally ordered it on March 18th though so it hasnt quite yet been a year that ive had it. Thanks for the info!
