sometimes being green stinks

Not that I think living in ignorance is better...obviously. But sometimes I miss the days when I could eat out at people's houses or restaurants without being hyper aware of exactly what I was ingesting. Loving food for the taste of it, and not thinking about it's environmental impact, or all the garbage that is in it or on it, or how an animal was treated, or a human slave abused. Eating was enjoyable..all of it. Even fast food in moderation. I used to love sushi, now I can't eat it.

Learning about our food is like deciding to take the red pill or the blue pill.

Re: sometimes being green stinks

  • I feel the same way about calorie counts. Why oh why did I look up the nutritional information for two of my favourite restaurants?

  • I know exactly what you mean.  Similarly, when someone tries to make the best choices and comes to you, beaming in their careful choice, but you know what is wrong with what they decided (especially true of gifts!), or the true cost of a comfy comforter or new chair.  Ignorance, i hear, is bliss : /

  • I totally agree.  The big one for me is beauty products.  I've been using cruelty-free products for many years and I would love to pick up whatever and not think about it.

  • I totally understand, I feel that way too sometimes.

  • I completely agree!! It's can be so hard when grocery shopping, not going for all the 'yummy' junk and soda that I used to consume. But, I also now I'm so much more healthy now because of those choices.

It's a tough path to follow, I definitely agree.

  • My big one is beauty products as well. Some products are much more expensive or harder to find when you start looking for all natural and eco-friendly products. I've switched over as much as I can, but I cringe every time I have to buy something non-EF just because its cheaper.

Same thing with some food. I can't afford the extra expense of some organic foods (apples, pears, etc). I try to tell myself I'm doing what I can now, and will do better when I am more financially stable.

  • OK, farmed salmon is one I definitely cannot make exceptions to.

But I try to let things go a little at friends houses and out....but then I realize that my friends are pretty aware and restaurants here are different. I wouldn't really say my friends are 'green', but they are respectful of what they use, support local, aren't wasteful, and recycle/compost (we have to here). And we have so many great places to eat and shop. We even have a fully sustainable sushi place. The chef is really committed to sustainable sushi and I've even heard him speak at a local foods event.

  • I completely agree.  For me it's eating non-local food or out of season, the Farmer's Market and my backyard garden have totally spoiled me.  I buy sweet peppers from the grocery store now and they're bland and tasteless.  I would kill for one of the purple ones from my favorite farm!  I used to love store bought sweet peppers, I ate them whole like apples.  Now I'm like "ugh, they're from Canada!  At least it's not Argentina or New Zealand!" and in the cart they go.  And if we forget to eat one or it goes bad, I feel so guilty.

Ignoring cooking tools are hard too. Our friends were so nice and made us homemade (like she made the crust herself) pizza, but in non-stick pans.  Using plastic cups at parties too is also really hard for me.  Did anyone see that Simpsons Sunday night...

I miss Mountain Dew too, but talk about bad for you, sheesh....

  • Me too...sometimes, guiltily and in a pinch when the budget just won't allow it I still do turn my head and buy whatever...but every time I see the darned bottle I think about it.
