St Patrick's Day Question
Just wondering why Americans seem to call it St Patty's Day? Over here it's shortened to St Paddy's Day (Paddy is a common abbreviation of the name Patrick, which is also my grandfather's name) but we never call it St Patty's Day (Patty being a woman's name).
My DH is Irish (as in, born and raised there) and would like to know as well.
TIA!
Re: St Patrick's Day Question
my guess is most people shorten patrick to pat....and it has T's in it, not D's...so that's how we shorten it.
My Shopping Blog
Because in Ireland Patrick is shortened to "Paddy" so they say St. Paddy's Day.
Here we short Patrick to Pat (Patty), hence - St. Patty's Day.
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
Ditto to ignorance.
My non Irish American family says Paddy....Patty is a girl.
off subject but this totally reminds me of my cousin, her daughters name is Madison. they call her "maddy", but spell it mattie there are NO Ts in Madison!. and Matt is so boyish! grrr. i will continue spelling it Madi.
