I need some inspiration please. The front of my house is very bare and boring... everyone else on my block has such wonderful curb appeal.
Last year DH and I worked on the grass, now that we got that part down pack. I'd like to start doing some landscaping and need tons inspiration. I'd like try the diy method before resulting to a landscaper, Landscaping can be very expensive and we are trying to cut cost.
Are there any blogs I can look at? Can you show me what you've done to the add curb appeal to the front of your house?
I am thinking evergreens/dwarf trees might be the way to go for us. I need something that is easy to maintain,
Thanks Ladies
Re: Front House Curb Appeal
What zone are you in? What is your soil like? How much sun does the area get? Are you looking to just do a flower bed along the house or something more?
First I'd drive around and figure out what you like about the landscape of homes in your area. Then I'd go to the library and find a shrub &/or ornamental tree book for your area. Also check out Better Homes & Garden's website for some pre-planned landscape layouts. It sounds like shrubs and trees are what you're looking for and they are typically very low maintenance as long as you get things that won't outgrow the area. Plus, you can always add flowers once the shrubs/trees are established.
A mixture of different colored foliage, texture (fine leaves vs. broad leaves), varying height, flowering shrubs/trees, and evergreen vs. deciduous will add visual interest all year round. Symmetry looks good in front of symmetrical houses (ie the door in the middle and the flower beds on either side are a mirror image of each other).
Once you get an idea of what kinds of plants you like you can look into varieties. I found this great boxwood guide for example that describes different varieities sorted by size:
