Enlighten me re: cornmeal for weeds

I'm an admitted rookie. Never heard of this before.

Our lawn is overgrown with crab grass, dandelions, and other weeds. I would guess over half the lawn.

It was recommended that I use a weed & feed product, so that as the weeds die out from the "weed", the rest of the lawn will take over from the "feed" = no brown / dead spots.

So... what does cornmeal do? Just weed? Does it not kill the grass either? Is it safe to use in flowerbeds (ie. won't kill the fllowers)? More info please!

TIA!

corn gluten meal prevents germination. so if weeds are established, they will only fertilize the weed.  if flowers are established, it won't hurt them.  but if they were newly planted from seed, it may.

Cornmeal is also FANTASTIC for attracting slugs and snails.
