Where in N. VA are you?  We're possibly moving there in the next couple months (job related move to Pentagon area) and just wondering what recommendations you have for good places to live/eat/shop etc.

I have to add that I'm WAY excited at having Wegmans again.  I grew up in upstate NY where there's tons of them (although normally smaller than the VA versions) and I miss it so much.

  • Hi Izzybeth!  I'm in Chantilly, on the border between Loudoun and Fairfax counties.  The Pentagon is in Arlington, that's about a 45 minute drive from me.  Are you or your DH in the military? I'm a environmental contractor for the military, I've been to the Pentagon a couple times for work.

I live a little too far away from Arlington to have good recommendations for you unfortunately.  Each area/city is very unique and has it owns vibe.  If you're moving to Fairfax to work in Arlington I might be able to help there.  Every city here has an awesome Farmer's Market, I go to the one in Leesburg, about 15 mins west of me.  I hear the D.C. market behind the White House is amazing, Michelle Obama shops there! Fairfax has a well-known vegetarian restaurant called Sunflower, DH and I eat there a lot.  Awesome asian food.

Wegmans is awesome!  Such a huge selection and helpful staff.  I have to be careful when I go there, it's impossible to get out of there without spending $100!  Yeah they're HUGE here.  Apparently Wegmans builds every store bigger than the last, which doesn't sound like a very sustainable business model to me but whatever.  I do most of my grocery shopping at WF because they have a bigger selection of vegetarian specialty things, Wegmas always seems to be out of stock.  I went last weekend actually to buy some "bacon" and it was all expired!  Yuck!

Where in Upstate NY did you grow up?  DH is from Ithaca and his family is still there, it's actually our goal to move up there.  Every time we go to visit his family I'm like, "do I have to come home? Really?  Can't we just go home and get the cat and never return again?"

  • Yeah I think we're going to try to live a little closer to DC so that I don't have to drive to work.  It's nice to hear that there's lots of farmer's markets, it's not nearly as easy to find good food here in Charlotte.

I'm originally from Syracuse, which is a pretty cool little city.  It's had an amazing recycling program for decades, and a great farmers market.  Good restaurants too, although my favorite one is a BBQ place, so that's not so great for you.  They have an awesome jazz fest every year.

My dad lives in Buffalo, and I think if I ever moved back to NY, I'd rather live there.  It's a bigger city with just more stuff going on.  DH and I are definitely city people.

The finger lakes are amazing though, I love visiting, going on wine tours.  It's just soooo pretty.

  • If you're not driving I assume you're try the Metro?  Good luck with that, they've been having some seeerrious problems lately.  The huge crash in July, several smaller crashes since then, increased fares, "ghost" trains, chairperson just stepped down, it's a huge mess.  I hope they get their act together because such a huge percentage of the entire tri-state area relies on them every day.

Yup there are lots of farmer's markets.  Mine is teeny tiny compared to the ones in D.C., we only have a dozen vendors or so in the winter and maybe 20-25 in the summer.  The big D.C. markets, like the one in Arlington, are easily double or triple that.  I don't know if they're grower only markets like mine, that's why I go to mine.

The finger lakes are amazing, Cayuga lake in Ithaca is this gorgeous pale blue.  They take water quality very seriously up there, and I'm always so happy to see the lake so clean.  Unlike here in VA, where there are several drainage pipes sticking about the waterline in every lake I drive by and the lake is brown Tongue Tied
