Tomato Cage Questions

I have someone on Freecycle willing to give me as many tomato cages as I want and I am trying to decide how many to take. What all can I grow up? We are doing square foot gardening. Here is what we are growing this year.

  • Your squashes & tomatoes.  My peppers don't usually need support (other than maybe a stake) and I wouldn't think your bush beans would need it either.

    I would maybe ask for 2 more than you think you'll need since they are free.

  • Pixie - do you know the size of the cages.  If your tomato plant is viney some of the cages are just too small.  I know you are not a tomato lover, but do you think you will expand that section in the future or are vining flowers or veggies.  It would be helpful to have cages to use as a trellis for those.   
  • J- The giver has two different sizes. So, lots of possibilities. I was thinking about the "using them as a trellis idea", especially next year when we may add more vining varieties. I'm glad to hear that someone with more experience thinks the same thing. I settled on taking 10-14, which I think will be more that enough. I'm picking them up tomorrow. So exciting!
