i need some food/party help

i'm starting to talk to a couple different bars/restaurants in Ohio about hosting my mom's 50th birthday. two places seem very flexible on their food menu. so flexible that its hard for me to even get an idea of pricing. they said they'd do things not on their regular menu.

so my question to you ladies ... if i could ask for my own appetizer menu (it'd be a buffet appetizer spread) what types of foods do you think could help me stretch my dollar? here's the regular menu they sent me. and i'm going to talk to the manager later, but i don't want to give the impression that i'm only looking for the cheap stuff. i just don't like all the choices on here.

Re: i need some food/party help

  • Do you know how many pieces come with the potato wedges, cheese sticks, pepper poppers, and shrimp cocktail? Also, would they quarter the quesadillas or put them in 1/8's? Seems hard to tell what would save you $ without knowing how much you'd be getting with each order. And some of those items I don't think I'd go for, like the chicken wings or nachos just b/c who wants to eat wings in front of others and nachos would be tough to serve from a buffet..Can they do a spinach/artichoke dip w/ pita bread or chips? I would think something like that would be good bang for your buck.
  • i might ask if they could do either boneless wings or fingers, sliders or mini pizzas. those would be more filling and still easy to stand and eat while you talk. i agree, wings are a bad idea.

i think my prices would be different than what's listed anyways b/c they would make it a tray, not just a normal serving (what's listed on this menu).

  • My initial thought is it seems very heavy on fried/greasy food. Is there a way to get some healthier options in there?

I was thinking the same thing.  It seems like most everything is either chock full of cheese and/or deep fried.

I think a cheese platter might be nicer instead of deep fried jalapeno cheese and/or mozzarella poppers.  I agree with Terp in that maybe a dip/hummus/bruschetta and some sides might be nice.  Depending on the time of year, maybe a nice fruit display?  Pasta dishes are always a good value for the dollar as well and they don't always have to be in a heavy cream sauce.  I would still recommend selecting a few things that are on their usual menu and then just adding a few others to yours.  You do want to make sure they are comfortable making some of the stuff--and hopefully they should know their own menu well.  I love little pizzas, but if they make their own, it won't necessarily make the price stretch--if they buy the pizza then that could be an option.  What about some chicken or beef skewers too?  Good luck and HTHs!
