What's up with the GMO alfalfa? (Updates?)
Sorry ladies, I am so busy with the kids.. can anyone fill me in on if there was any update to the GMO alfalfa issue? Has there been any kind of action on it?
Re: What's up with the GMO alfalfa? (Updates?)
The public comment period on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) ended March 3. The EIS received 13,599 comments. I know that sound like a lot, but I write EISs for a living and my projects have had higher. Like the comments for the southern border wall between us and Mexico? Yeah, like 50,000 comments.
What happens now is the contractor, ICF International, reviews the comments and revises the EIS accordingly, addressing comments that were specific enough to tell where problems in the EIS are. Once the Final EIS is submitted to the USDA,the USDA will either issue a Record of Decision, approving GMO alfalfa, or decline the proposed action and GMO alfalfa will stay a regulated article. The decision should be in a few months if the contractor stays on schedule. June maybe?
I went to the public meeting in Maryland at the end of February. Here's how it went. The Supreme Court is also going to be reviewing the procedure for the GMO alfalfa case, not the case itself. Link to that.
