How feasible is this (food waste/composting sort of question)

My town has a recycling drop-off event quarterly (Jan, Apr, Aug,Nov) where residents can drop off green waste. I was thinking maybe I could buy a composting bin, or something similar, to keep my food waste in the garage until the recycling events & then drop it off at the recycling event every couple of months.

So... is this a feasible plan? Can I find a bin that would be easy to transport the recycling center? Can 3 months or so of food waste be stored/composted without having a giant bin (space is at a premium in our garage)? Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Thanks!

  • I really don't think that is feasible. It would really really smell and be mostly liquid after 3 months.

Ah, thanks for your insight. I'm trying to figure out a way to reduce, but living in a townhouse without a yard or anything is making things difficult.

  • What about a vermicomposter that you can put under your kitchen sink?

    I'll look into it!

I always knew worms were great for composting, but I had assumed they needed to be outside.

  • You could put the composter in the garage, too.

  • What would you be composting if you don't have a yard (so no grass clippings/yard waste)?  Kitchen scraps?  Rather than saving up compost you can't use, I would start a soup stock bag in your freezer.  Add kitchen scraps (Google for what kind you can save for soup stock) to a larger freezer bag and once it's full make stock and freeze it.  Voila!  No more scraps in the trash, and free food!

She could use shredded newspaper/cardboard rolls from TP, etc. as her "browns" for compost... and I guess she could just give it away or use it for house plants...
