Taxes...we owe $1400

How in the hell do we owe?  I was LAID-OFF for 5 months of 2009???

Seriously...we paid in $18k to federal taxes this year and that isn't enough.

We live in a fixer-upper 3 bed 1 bath house on the crappy side of a 1st ring suburb - our cars are all older than 2005.  We even had $6k worth of charitable deductions (mostly clothes and household duplicates) and the $1,500 energy credit and it is still that high.

Ugh...its not like we're rolling in the dough...we didn't even take a farking honeymoon.

Yay socialism yay.

(vent over)

Re: Taxes...we owe $1400

  • I was unemployed all last year.  I paid over 10% of my unemployment income to federal taxes and I owe state.  Awesome isn't it...
  • That really sucks. We only have to pay about $500 (hopefully) but it sucks nonetheless. Sorry you guys got screwed, I feel your pain!

Yup. I did the fed unemployment withholding too...apparently it wasn't enough. We owe 800 on state. Why bother being a productive member of society?

  • Did you have your taxes deducted from your unemployment benefits?  I'm sorry 'bout the pay in, that sucks big time!

I ask myself this all the time.  My brother just had a very similar situation and it just sucks.  Seems to me like the freeloaders have it made in the shade.
  • VERY Sorry to hear this!!! We hope to do ours this wkend or at least start them... ugh.

    What a pia...

  • Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat! I would be SO PISSED!!!! How can you owe that much, with being unemployeed and making all those donations?

Did you have someone do your taxes?

DH and I are both employeed, own a home, and we didnt make nearly the amount of donations you made and we are getting $400 back

  • Yikes! Sorry, honey!

I'm afraid to do my taxes now. . .

  • That sucks big time!  Do you usually owe?

We owed this year too.  I'm so mad.  DH works in a different state than we live and it screwed us over majorly.  Owed state and federal.  I was so looking forward to a return with buying the house and doing some energy star stuff to the house.

  • Are you guys claiming exemptions?  I always claim 0 (although last year 1/2 way through, I switched to 1) and have them take out at the higher single rate.  I owed $2800 one year between fed and state and it sucked arse.  Never again.

We got 4K back last year (which we later found out was too much; thank you, $1700 tax bill) and I expect a couple thousand back this year.  It's a nice little savings plan.

  • When I got laid off in october dh changed his deductions from 0 to 2 thinking it would just balance out...I guess we just make "too much". Ugh. Last year we got a small refund. At least for 2010 we will have the kid deductions to take. We're not in the amt category but I guess part of dh's salary is taxed more than last year since he got a small raise. Lesson learned...being unemployed actually sucks worse with taxes.

  • We used to get nice chunks back each year, but the last two years our returns have dwindled down to smaller and smaller amounts.  We get our taxes done next week and I'm totally sweating it.
