bra underwires suck

I love them in bras, but when they come out of your bra...

This past weekend our washing machine stated making this horrible death rattle. We stopped using it, and the repair guy finally came in today. He took a look (it was also making a horrible noise when you manually turned the drum with your hand) and determined that one of my bra underwires came out and lodged itself in the components of the drum. He could see it with his flashlight through the holes, but it was completely unaccessible. To take the entire machine apart to remove it would be at least $500. If we leave it, one of four things will happen:

- it'll never come loose and we'll always have to listen to this horrible noise

- it'll free itself with the vibrations and movement and fall harmlessly to the bottom of the machine

- it'll free itself and get thrown into the pump, which will possibly break the pump and cause a small leak, but be easier and cheaper to repair than dismantling the whole machine, or

-it'll free itself and get thrown into the bearings, which will break the machine, but will still be cheaper and easier to repair than just removing the underwire.

So I told him to leave it alone, paid the $78 for the service call, and am finally getting caught up on my mountain of laundry while listening to the machine make a horrible metal-on-metal clang. Stupid underwire. I didn't even notice I had one missing.

  • I wash my bras in mesh laundry bags... it's probably not foolproof against this, but couldn't hurt!

  • lol, that happened to me once. I managed to get the underwire out myself, though. I had to laugh when I saw this post, I have been fighting with this underwire all morning...it keeps stabbing me in the armpit!

Ooh, I hate that! One of my bras does that too.

... wait. Should I say it used to? I imagine that's the bra that caused this.

  • And it's OUT! I noticed the second load of laundry didn't sound like an awful garage band during the final spin cycle so when it was done I spun the drum manually. Quiet as a mouse. Everything seems to be working fine so I guess it dropped through the machine without causing any problems. I'm really glad I didn't fork over $500  for them to remove it. Kind of pisses me off though that I didn't do laundry all week and paid $78 for nothing.

  • I was my bra's in the sink.

Glad it is out and that you didn't pay to have it removed!

I always mean to do that, because I think that's what you're supposed to do for the longevity of the garment, but I usually get lazy and throw it in the wash. :p

Glad it came out by itself!
