Why did i get a letter from the gov't telling me i'd be getting the census in the mail in a couple weeks? What a WASTE!

Re: Census waste
Yep, mine went straight in the recycling. What a ridiculous waste!
I think they should do the census in three phases; online, then mail to those who don't complete it online, then in-person for those who don't send it back. Think of all the paper they would eliminate!
Cute story, about the census because I'm feeling chatty this morning
: my mom brought in the mail just as my little brother (okay, he's 19) was leaving for work, and when he saw the envelope he insisted she not fill out the census while he was gone because he wants to help. It made me laugh because I was an uber-excited geek during the last census and did the same thing. Anyways, he was disappointed to discover it was a useless letter.
Haha, we got two of the exact same letter as well, I also thought it was a waste.
Not only is it a waste of paper, talk about a waste of $$. Maybe the Post Office talked someone into doing it to help them generate some cash flow?
C'mon people!!
Do it!!
While it's wasteful (I totally agree that it is), it is a huge tool for researchers. I use the census data all the time for my school work and my master's project. I agree with the other poster's DH that it probably will help with response rate.
i also got it and was soooo pissed when i saw it was just a stupid, useless letter. i was complaining to DH (who thought i was nuts), it really amazes me how they know we're in a recession, and the gov't is trillions in debt, but they have the time, energy and resources to send out that ridiculous letter!
This. There have been fake Censui (?Censuses?) going around that people will use to steal your personal information. It may be wasteful but as someone else said the census is important, and they are trying to keep it trustworthy so people don't get scared off.
There has been plenty of research that determined that sending out a reminder letter will increase response up to 8%. It's cheaper to send a reminder letter than to have to send out more workers to knock on doors and try to count people that way. So overall it's cheaper and not a waste of resources.
The census is very important and is how counties receive funding and services. Also related to green living, they are able to determine which areas are developing rapidly and are a threat to wildlife.
