Nice areas to live in Binghamton area?

MH, DS and I will be relocating to the Binghamton area in May so that I can attend BU for a year.  We've seen some places that look decent on craigslist to rent, but are trying to get a better sense of the neighboring areas.  MH actually did his undegrad there and is semifamilar with things.  He was thinking we should look in Vestal, but are there better parts than others even within Vestal to live?

 Thanks!

Re: Nice areas to live in Binghamton area?

  • Nice areas in Binghamton is getting to be an oxymoron these days.  It's all hit or miss.  On the south side of Binghamton, by MacArthur park there are nice homes, but nothing to rent.  If you want to rent, there are some nice apartments in Johnson City above the mall - Indian Ridge?
  • I would say that Vestal has the least amount of "bad" areas.  Binghamton, Johnson City, and Endicott all have their fair share of sketchy areas to live.

Are you looking to rent a house or an apartment?  How much are you looking to spend?

Like Astreyllne said, Indian Ridge has very nice apartments and they are close to BU, but they are pricey.

Summit Chase and Graydon apartments are in Endicott.

Have you checked into Graduate housing on campus?  I'm not sure what they have to offer but it might be worth looking into.

Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help!

  • There are also some apartments behind Target in Vestal...I dont know the name bt I have had some friends live in them and they were grad student/ family apartments

  • We'll need to rent because my program is only a year and it's likely that we won't stay down there afterward.

We'd like to try and stay under $1k preferably somewhere around $700 for a two bedroom+

Our preference is for renting a duplex/stand alone house if we can because we don't really care for apartment complexes given past experiences and having DS now we''d like some outdoor space.

I know it's a tall order, but after living in the Boston metro for a number of years we've become picky about places we'll rent.

  • well the west side of binghamton- near rec park is a popular student area with lots of duplexes that students rent. I know BU keeps a list of lanlords and avail properties (most are people renting a whole house but I knw they have had some listings for side of the duplex)

  • When are you planning on moving??  You'll probably find something on the west side of Binghamton...we live in a duplex on the south side of Bing near the zoo and we're moving out around July...
