Shower Cleaning

I'm new here (still a Knottie), but I wanted to get some ideas on how you keep your shower caulking clean of mold and soap scum.

We just replaced the caulk around the bathtub because of the mold and now that its fresh and new, I want to keep it looking that way. I clean the shower/tub once a week and only use green products (7th Generation or Method), but they don't seem to work that well as the mold keeps coming back.

Thanks!

Re: Shower Cleaning

  • If you are okay with bleach use non-chlorinated bleach or if not use vinegar.

  • I use vinegar and water and keep it in a spray bottle inside my shower.  Also, I know ventilation is key in keeping the mold/mildew away also.
  • I use a paste of Borax and Dr. Bronner's, and it gets the tub super clean. It also works well on the shower curtain. Also, make sure that you keep the bathroom well ventilated. Sometimes I also spray the curtain with vinegar, like in the winter, when we can't open windows.
  • If mold comes back that fast, it sounds like you have a ventilation problem. As for bathroom cleaner, I use the recipe in this blog entry (under the pic of the spray bottles).

  • Seventh Generation has a great, safe shower cleaner, too.  I don't use it personally (I just use the multi-purpose stuff), but it's available!
  • Great ideas!

I think ventilation is part of the problem. I'll keep the fan on at least 10 minutes after showers and see if that helps.

I use Method daily shower cleaning now, but I really like the idea of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. I think that will smell less perfume-y and much more clean.

7th Generation makes a non-chlorine bleach, so if things get bad again, I'll try that. Thanks again!
