Underwater digital camera recs?

Going to Mexico in May. Looking for a digital point and shoot that takes pretty good pics underwater. The pics taken w/ a Canon D10 that they have posted on Amazon look awesome but I've read a lot of reviews that say that it leaked the first time people used it and isn't warranteed against water damage so I'd be hesitant to spend nearly $300 on one. Anyone have any recommendations?

Re: Underwater digital camera recs?

  • I'm currently reviewing a case from Aquapac http://www.aquapac.net/usstore/erol.html#1X0 that is supposed to be waterproof to a certain number of feet. So far, it's been awesome. And it's a lot cheaper than an underwater specific camera. Those cameras tend to look ok for underwater pics but above water pics are left lacking. If you're interested in checking it out or using it, definitely let me know and I can get it to you the next time there is a GTG that we both go to. That is, of course, assuming that you already have a digital camera. :-)

  • I have a Olympus Stylus 1030SW.  We've been really happy with it.

It's waterproof to 33 ft, freezeproof to 14 F, crushproof to 220 lbs of pressue, shockproof from a drop of 6.6 ft.

I've used our underwater in the mangroves, but my composition skills are lacking.  The photos were clear, but of nothing useful.

Olympus has released a new version that also does HD video.  It's the Stylus Tough 8300 I think.

We've had it for two years.  They sell a gasket replacement set if you need it.  And they recommend cleaning it by turning it on and off under running water.

  • I have the Panasonic TS1 - and there is now an updated TS2 out that I highly recommend.  Camera tests done by DPReview have shown that the TS1 outperforms the Olympus cameras in image quality.  The HD video that the TS1 takes is superb too!

The Canon D10 is a great camera too, but it is a little bulky/awkward.  The TS1 works well in and out of water and looks just like a regular point & shoot.

You could also look into an underwater casing with your current point & shoot.  I did this a few years back when I went to USVI.  Underwater casings run in the $150-200 range.  Here is a link to some photos I made underwater with my Panasonic TZ1 (not to be confused with the TS1 that is waterproof!) and underwater casing: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thehopscotch/sets/72157611460389709/

  • Olympus Stylus Tough.

Great underwater pics, easy to use, shock proof, drop proof (to 6ft) ect.

If you'd like to see what type of pics it can take go here: kristiandkerry.com

go through our Mexico pics (we just got back on Sat.) as they are the only ones taken with that camera. Some are a bit fuzzy but that's due to operator error :)

PS These are also not the high res version these have been scaled down to web version.

  • I've heard great things about Olympus underwater cameras, but have never used one myself.

I have a Canon Power Shot A620 (which has an underwater setting to correct the white balance) and I bought the Canon underwater housing that was made for the camera. I'm pretty sure the total was under $400 for the camera and housing, and the camera is excellent.

  • I have an Olympus Stylus (730) but it just died last week when I took it snorkeling.  The camera was 5 yrs old and worked like a charm until then.  I made the problem worse by trying to restart the camera before it was completely dried out inside.  I thought it was but could have been more patient/thorough in checking.

I will be replacing it with a new Stylus. I loved that camera -- hubby & kids loved the point & shoot aspects. We got lots of terrific underwater and water related photos and it took great everyday photos, candids etc.  I liked that is also worked well in the cold. We ski and our previous camera always fogged up or slowed down in the cold.  Loved how it just slips into your pocket (unlike the bulky water proof containers for regular cameras.)
