? about the Diva cup

At first the idea really grossed me out. But I've heard a lot of really great reviews. However, I have an IUD and my understanding is that you cannot use the Diva cup with an IUD. Can anyone confirm this? I'm really not willing to switch forms of BC right now because the pill gave me life-threatening blood clots in my lungs, so I cannot take any hormonal birth control so the IUD really is the best option.

If I can't use something like the Diva cup, I'll make myself feel better about it because the IUD causes my periods to be so incredibly short and light that I barely have to use anything :)

Re: ? about the Diva cup

  • I use the diva cup, and I have an IUD. My gynecologist didn't think it would be a problem, and so far it hasn't been. I asked about it on this board and on ML too, and other people also use it w/ an IUD.
  • Good to know. I know the Diva Cup website says (or it used to say when I checked it out last year) that you cannot use it with an IUD. But the manufacturers of the IUD also say you can't have an IUD if you haven't had kids, and that certainly isn't accurate either.

  • I think in both cases it's is just not recommended... IUD are more likely to become dislodged in women who have not been pregnant and have the potential to cause tissue damage that could interfere with successful future pregnancies so they are not recommended.  The IUD has the potential to become dislodged during menstrual cup use, so it is not recommended for use together; as far as i can tell it is mostly an issue of liability.

While i've never had an IUD, i am familiar with how they are designed and i can't fathom how you would manage to pull it out (even a little) while using the diva cup in any normal sort of way.

  • I don't actually have a Diva Cup I have a Mooncup. But they are pretty much the same thing though. I've had my Mooncup for 4 years and my IUD for 3 years. So far no problem.
  • I used it with an IUD with the approval of my dr. That said, my IUD did partially expel after 10 months. I have no idea if the two were associated, though.
