Beach recs for dogs in San Diego

Looking for recommendations for a new beach to explore with our baby puppy. We spend alot of time at Coronado dog beach, but would like to try something new. Anyone have any recommendations?

Re: Beach recs for dogs in San Diego

  • I have heard of 2 other dog beaches - one in Ocean Beach and one in Del Mar.  I dont know exactly where they are but heard both are really fun.

What kind of puppy do you have? We have a 1 year old lab, but I'm scared to bring him to dog beach.  He hasn't exactly learned the "come" command yet =)

  • Our favorite is Del Mar, but now that we moved to Hillcrest, we don't go as often. We're at Coronado now at least 3 times a week, if not more.

I'd stay away from Ocean Beach, unless you want your dog to be attacked.  We went there twice, and each time our dogs was attacked before we even had a chance to come near the water.  We came to learn that it's just that kind of beach.  It seems to draw in the people with the aggressive, unaltered dogs.  Del Mar has the nicest owners by far, but depending on where you live, it can be a bit of a drive.  And, parking is $3/hr, which sucks.

What kind of dog do you have?  My Bulldog is 18 months old and my Boston Terrier is 7 months old.

  • Thanks ladies, our baby is just a mix from the pound. He is 9 months old. We are really enjoying him. He really likes the water and we will definitely stay away from Ocean Beach, we heard that it can be a little scary at times. Is there anywhere to go at Mission Bay?
  • Mission Bay does not allow dogs anywhere in the park system (and we have learned that MB encompasses like half of SD) during most times.  Until May, you can go after 4, but once Labor Day comes, it becomes 6.  And before 9am all year.  So, we avoid MB at all costs because they ticket like crazy there.  We do take ours kayaking/boating there, just not to walk around.

And speaking of restrictions, once June comes, you can no longer bring your dog off-leash to the Del Mar dog beach.  That's from June to September, so Coronado will be getting much more crowded during those months.

There's also Fiesta Island.  The entire island is off-leash, but there is an area with a dog park and water access that most dog owners go to.  It's cool because you can get in a nice walk while the dogs run off-leash.

If you ever want to meet up with your pup, let me know.  My boys love to play with other dogs!  We take them to the park almost nightly (on days they don't get to go to the beach!).

  • YAY for your rescue dog! You should post pics :)

Unfortunately no place at Mission Bay except after hours.

Del Mar dog beach is nice. We've brought our jack, Lucy there, even during the on-leash times. It's still fun to take them in the water there b/c the water is so calm.

Love Coronado dog beach, you aren't going to get much nicer than that :) I'd stay away from Ocean Beach.

    Good luck!

  • thanks sounds great. we will be in touchSmile
  • everyone has such great looking babies.
  • We go to Ocean Beach quite regularly and have never really had a problem with aggressive behavior dogs.  I have both a large, shepherd mix and a small mix breed.   We do go very early in the morning to avoid crowds, so maybe that is why we have not had any issues.
  • Does anyone know of one further north? We're in Oceanside... so it's almost closer to drive up to San Clemente than down to Coronado.
