cleaning shower curtain liner

The plastic inside one, not the fabric one. I used to just throw it out and buy a new one before I knew better. Now I know that they can be cleaned and reused. Do you have a method that works to get the slime off?

TIA!

Re: cleaning shower curtain liner

  • I normally just use vinegar and water in a spray bottle and then wipe it down.  In my blog there are a ton of recipes for making your own cleaners. Most of them should do the job.
  • I throw mine in the washer on delicate with some detergent and then fill the fabric softener cup with vinegar.  I hang it back up to dry.  This has worked very well so far, although I'm going to have to replace mine soon for other reasons (kitties tearing holes in it lol)
  • Oh the joys of plastic liners....such a pain and they get dirty so quickly especially if you have minerals in your water.  I used to have a plastic one but then realized that they make fabric inside liners.  So I picked one up for about $10 and just toss it in the wash every now and then!  So much easier.  DH was grossed out at first when I mentioned it, but he didn't even notice for a couple days once I replaced it!  Now he could care less.  GL!

  • it may be wise to invest in a fabric liner given the toxins that you breathe in from vinyl liners:

  • I throw ours in with a load of towels and hang it to dry.  I also add vinegar to that rinse cycle.

Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
  • I've tried the fabric liners, but our water pressure is pretty high and it soaked the line and the outer cloth curtain...no bueno.

So I purchased a "green" eco-friendly plastic liner from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. This liner is amazing! It keeps away slime and mildew for much longer than any other liners I've tried and it has no fumes whatsoever. I washed in the machine just once and it came out a little wrinkly, but the slime was gone. It lasted me about 5 months before I replaced it.

  • I wash it in the washer 3-2 times per year. We've had the same one for 4 years (albiet it was a heavy-duty $25 one).

  • I just threw mine in the wash for the first time and it looks okay!

  • I have a $7 liner that I bought from Target in 2004. Once it gets gunky, I throw it into the washing machine. Thats it! I have a very scummy shower (LOTS of minerals in our water), but I just use detergent, and it comes out squeaky clean.
