Re: Educate me please

  • The colors/breeds of the chickens that laid them.

  • Thanks I wondered the same thing myself!

This.  The nutrition values are the same, and one is not more EF than the other.

Therefore do NOT pay more for brown eggs.  I once overheard a woman telling her child that brown eggs are better for you, so that's why they bought them.  Um, no.

Did you know chickens lay all sorts of colors of eggs?  I don't know what they do w/ the ones that aren't brown or white.  Or maybe they can ensure they are either all brown and white?

In any case a lady who used to work for my employer sells us eggs from her chickens.  You wouldn't beleive the beautiful blue and green and brown/cream shades in which the eggs come.  They look like easter eggs.

My Great Aunt has brown hens that lay green, blue, and purple eggs. They really is a myriad of colors that they lay, and while I think the more colorful ones are fun, I don't think that they harbor any extra nutrition.

I remember an old jingle that included "Brown eggs are local eggs, and local eggs are fresh!"  My guess is that it was for a particular local farm/distributor and that's what they had available?
  • All of the local, cage-free eggs at my supermarket were brown so I was just curious. Thanks for the feedback!

  • I buy local brown eggs that are so good. Its not the brown shell that's different but rather the breed of chicken (and that does effect the egg), and then for my eggs, freshness, diet, handling, etc.
