Need some suggestions for polka dot/cupcake B-day
I
don't really have a theme for our ds 1st B-day but I'm using blue and
brown colors. Our invites had blue and brown polka dots. I'm using the
giant cupcake for his smash cake and giving out regular size cupcakes
to the guest. I'm not really sure how to decorate the cupcakes. I was
thinking of using blue and brown m&m's but I'm nervous that is a
chocking hazzard. Any suggestions on how to decorate the cupcakes? I'm
having a hard time finding solid blue and brown sprinkles. Also, I'm
going to use a few balloons but I just saw some chinese laterns that I
might hang above his high chair. Any other suggestions on what I could
do? Any suggestions would be great!

What about just dying the frosting brown or blue? Or they have that food coloring spray you can use instead.
I agree that the M&Ms might not be such a good idea.
I would do half the cupcakes with choc frosting and half with vanilla frosting (made blue with food coloring). No need for sprinkles, b/c it's like they're giant polka dots on display.
You could make a blue and brown garland of balloons like this: http://camillestyles.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/balloon-garland-oh-joy.jpg No helium needed!
HTH!
I would use either buttercream or fondant.
