Recommend your smartphone att or verizon...

I'm getting my first smartphone and I can't decide which is better. It looks like Verizon has better 3G coverage, but I really like the Iphone.  I was looking at the droid on Verizon, but it's Motorolla and I've had a Motorolla  and the battery life is HORRIBLE.  What would be other good options???  TIA!

  • I won't get a different phone other than my iPhone - I love it.  How does AT&T do in terms of coverage for your area?  I've had absolutely no problems where I live/work/play whatsoever. Check with your friends who might have AT&T to see how they do in your area.

  • We got iPhones in December 09'. We really like them. Unfortunately the apartments we just moved into, we have a lot of dropped calls. I'm assuming it's because of the insulation, etc.

My mother has the Motorola Droid from Verizon. She had a problem with her first phone that she got in December 09' as well. Took it in a few weeks ago and they had to give her an entirely new phone. Luckily there are not refurbished Droid's yet or she would have gotten stuck with a refurbished even though she just bought it brand new a few months ago. I personally do not like her phone one bit. It is not user friendly at all. The iPhone is so simple to use while her phone is horrendous.

  • I have an HTC Droid Eris and my DH has a Motorola Droid.  The battery life is not too much of an issue but you you are looking to use the Smartphone A LOT then I would advise getting a cord to take with you.

I like my Eris.  It does just about everything the Droid does.  The only downside right now is that the Eris is going to most likely be retired the beginning of April in anticipation of the HTC Incredible.  It does not have the 2.1 Firmware upgrade the Nexus and newer HTC phones have.  The rumor is that the Eris will get 2.1 "soon."  It currently runs a 1.5 Firmware.  Basically, it means you can't get audible turn-by-turn GPS directions.  There is a leaked version of 2.1 out for the Eris but it hasn't been officially released yet.

As far as the Droid goes, my DH loves his Droid.  He uses it all the time and does charge it periodically during the day (he has a second charger at work and one for the car).  He loves the feel of it. He loves the capabilities.  He has it set up for his secure work email as well as all the other emails he uses for various things.  He has all of his news feeds and then he is also able to connect to his buddies for all of his online gaming things.  Currently the Droid does not have 2.1, again with the caveat that it is coming "soon."   I have seen people "root" the phone in order to get it.

www.droidforums.net is a great resource to talk to others regarding the Droid phones.

ETA: They are issuing refurb Droids if you have an issue with an old one and take it back in.  If you go in to get a new contract, you do get a new phone but if you have to bring it back for whatever reason, the location has the option of giving you a refurbished one.

  • I have the HTC Droid Eris and have been very happy with it.  Good luck with your search :)
  • I cannot sing the Droid's praises enough. We went with these over the iPhone primarily because 1) the Droids have such better coverage (never had a dropped call on these) and 2) the built-in GPS. We do not own separate GPS units, so this wound up being a perfect purchase. Here's some more of the Droid perks if you're interested.
